What do I do as a Peace Games Volunteer?
- Volunteers make a year - or semester - long commitment to work in small teams to teach children the essential skills of peacemaking and non-violence through the interactive Peace Games curriculum.
- Volunteers prepare for and teach a one hour class once a week. Peace Games teaches students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
- In the spring, volunteers will join their students in creating a community service learning project. There will be opportunities to celebrate and share what they've learned with other Peace Games students across the city.
- Volunteers are given the opportunity to reflect on their experience and develop teaching skills.
What is a typical week for a volunteer?
Volunteers will spend approximately 5 hours each week in Peace Games activities. This time includes:
- Meet with your teaching team to plan the lesson or after school activities (1 - 2 hours)
- Teach a Peace Games lesson (1 - 3 hours)
- Travel time to and from the school (30 min. - 2 hrs; round trip)
What support do I receive?
- Peace Games has formal trainings for volunteers. These required trainings cover teaching skills, team building, and personal reflection.
- Peace Games has full-time staff dedicated to nurturing the growth and experience of volunteers through activities on college campuses such as on-going meetings for reflection, speakers, and informal troubleshooting.
- Peace Games will assist volunteers seeking college credit for their teaching experience.
What kind of commitment do I make?
Volunteers agree to a school year-long commitment of service to Peace Games and its students. Volunteering with Peace Games will be a rewarding and challenging experience! The curriculum is eighteen weeks long (October - April) and is scheduled to allow for regular college vacations off.
